In the spirit of Irreverence I have an idea for our little zine making group. Just plain delete this post if its not a good idea. I am reading Reading Lolita in Tehran at the suggestion of my mother. It’s a pretty quick read and I think will be relevant to our investigation of Irreverence.
The idea of god-irreverence and social-irreverence are closely linked in this representation of life in an islamic fundamentalist country. Perceived irreverent behavior and appearance of women in public offends god and is (often violently) punishable. When I look up Irreverence in my online thesaurus, atheism is the related post directly under the synonyms for our prompt. how curious. Is the meaning of Irreverence not specifically human? an individual’s conscious dissent from another’s perspective, a healthy doubt unrelated to a metaphysical investigation of is-He isn’t-He? Perhaps the demonizing of political dissenters comes from a history of god-keeping for the sake of order-keeping, control-keeping. What is the god or ideal that control us? Money? Politicians? Maybe it is Culture, the bought experience. Let us Dissent ! Let us Detourn ! Let us be Irreverent !
